Dallas, TX Cosmetic Dentist Discusses Teeth Whitening Products
Whitening strips that you purchase at your local pharmacy can have drawbacks. It’s true they can be partially effective because of their peroxide-based whitening agent, but the formulation is not nearly as potent as that used safely by our Dallas, TX Cosmetic Dentist Office. Another disadvantage is that the strips only come in contact with the front surface of your teeth, but not the spaces between your teeth. It is possible for this product to slowly remove stains over time but it may take months and significant expense to see any noticeable results whatsoever.
Teeth Whitening Rinses
These rinses are similar to a mouthwash; they can effectively kill bacteria, remove some plaque and freshen your breath. But unlike mouthwashes, they also contain hydrogen peroxide. The manufactures of this type of product instruct you to rinse your mouth twice a day for one minute each. They advise that it may take 12 weeks to see any results. However, most consumers report little or no difference after use, most likely because the rinse barely comes into contact with your teeth for two minutes a day.
Teeth Whitening Gels
Over-the-counter whitening gels are clear, peroxide-based gels applied directly onto the surface of your teeth. The instructions call for use twice daily for two weeks. Results may be seen in a few days with final results lasting about four months. But the drawback to this type of product is that proper application is difficult because teeth must be completely free of saliva before use in order for the gel to be effective
Whether you choose a home whitening treatment or a quick and effective in-office whitening system such as Zoom or Boost, always consult with your dentist first. OurDallas, TX Cosmetic Dentist will examine your teeth to make sure there are no underlying oral health issues that may be negatively impacted through the use of over-the-counter whitening agents.
